Summer Volunteers

If golf, paddling, cycling, or tennis are your summer passions, volunteer with Maine Adaptive and put your skills to good use helping participants learn to enjoy the sports you love. Lessons are held in locations throughout southern Maine with friendly people and sometimes even a hot dog or s’more are thrown in for good measure!


Summer Volunteer Opportunities

  • Instructor: Teach and assist participants.
  • Program Host: Greet participants and volunteers as they arrive to sign in. Assist Program Staff with daily paperwork.
  • Photography: Digital and print photography of all summer activities.

Summer Volunteer Instructor Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Climbing – must know basic indoor climbing techniques and safety skills
  • Cycling – must have own bicycle and helmet
  • Golf & Tennis – have a basic knowledge of the sport
  • Paddling – know basic strokes and safety skills
  • Photography – provide your own camera

Winter Volunteers

If you are passionate about skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing, volunteer with Maine Adaptive and pass on your love of sports. Volunteer instructors help participants learn and improve their skills on the slopes and trails.


Winter Volunteer Opportunities

  • Instructor: Alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and alpine racing. Instructors are paired with participants to teach and improve skills in their chosen snow sport.
  • Equipment: Help set up, maintain, and repair skis, and adaptive equipment.
  • Office: Assist staff in filing, data entry, mailings or at the reception desk.
  • Photography: Digital and print photography and videography on-snow and in the headquarters to capture the essence of Maine Adaptive.
  • Snowmobile driver: Transport participants who are unable to use a ski lift, along with their instructors.
  • Internships: On-snow or off, a variety of opportunities exist for college students in the winter. (Intern application material is listed below)
  • Junior Volunteers: Six week program for 16 & 17 year olds (see additional information at bottom of this page)

Winter Volunteer Instructor Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older, or part of the Junior Volunteer program
  • Be an intermediate or better skier or rider
  • Provide your own equipment
  • Attend 2 pre-season trainings in November or December
  • Volunteer 10 days between January and April

All winter on-snow volunteers are given a lift pass to use on the day they volunteer if they don’t have their own season pass.


Junior Volunteers

The program consists of 3 preseason training sessions and then volunteering on Sundays and one Saturday with the race team, beginning in January. The volunteer days consist of training sessions and working with participants. Junior Volunteers will work with Maine Adaptive volunteers who have expertise in the different phases of adaptive skiing and disabilities. Junior Volunteers will learn how to use adaptive equipment and understand the aspects of different disabilities and disability etiquette. Most sessions will pair the Junior Volunteer with a seasoned volunteer and participant in a full day lesson.

Lift tickets are provided by Sunday River / Sugarloaf. Clinics are led by Maine Adaptive and experienced volunteer instructors. As an added bonus, the program can cover community service requirements for most high schools.

Junior Volunteer requirements

  • Must be 16 before program begins
  • Must provide own equipment
  • Must have parent’s signature
  • Must be intermediate or better skier or rider
  • Must commit to attending the full 6-week program
